DESCRIPTION:The Community Connections Café is a welcoming space where people with memory loss or Dementia\, and their care partners\, can come to connect with others and support their brain health while socializing. This is an opportunity to enjoy simple refreshments and make new friends in a Dementia Friendly Community Space. \nThe Community Connections Cafe focuses on social wellness for people with memory loss or Dementia\, and their care partners. The program is informal with the intended atmosphere of a local coffee shop where participants can chat over a beverage\, do something creative\, or play a game. \n  \nEvery 2nd Wednesday of the month from 12:30pm to 2:30pm In-person at our AST Mid Scarborough Hub.\nAddress: 2658 Eglinton Avenue East\, Scarborough\, ON\, M1K2S3 \n  \nRegistration is required for this program and closes at midnight (12am) the day prior to the event.\nPlease specify the number of guests attending when you register. You may register up to 3 persons per group.

SUMMARY:Mid-Town Social
DESCRIPTION:May 13th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at AST located at 20 Eglinton Ave West\, 16th floor. \nMid-Town Social: Ikebana Program \nMid-Town Social supports social wellness for people living with dementia and their care partners. In this session\, Aya Sugino and Keith Francis introduce Ikebana—the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging. \nIkebana\, meaning “the way of flowers\,” is a 500-year-old practice that emphasizes balance\, simplicity\, and mindfulness. Its focus on minimalism\, natural forms\, and connection to nature can support mental well-being\, making it a meaningful activity for those living with dementia and their care partners. \nAya Sugino (Sogetsu School) and Keith Francis (MA) will explore biophilia—our connection to nature—while demonstrating Ikebana. They will also explain its core elements: Shin\, Soe\, and Hikae\, representing heaven\, humanity\, and earth. A raffle for the Ikebana display will follow the session. \nAbout the Presenters\nAya Sugino is a certified Ikebana instructor with over 15 years of experience\, having taught widely and created installations for major cultural\, corporate\, and hospitality venues. \nKeith Francis is an interdisciplinary researcher specializing in design\, biophilia\, and dementia.
