SUMMARY:Virtual Explore Art with Jano
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, June 16th from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M on Zoom  \nJoin us for another insightful Explore Art with Jano\, a virtual art appreciation program. This session we will focus on nature\, specifically trees. Sturdy and protective\, trees provide us with shelter\, oxygen and they have also served as inspiration for the visual and literary arts. \nJoin us with your curiosity and come ready to share thoughts and ideas. We will look at tall and trim\, stout and leafy trees depicted in distinct styles throughout recent history. \nJano Cortijo is an arts educator whose work finds him engaging audiences of various ages\, abilities\, and backgrounds in museums\, classrooms\, community centers\, and online. Straying far from the canon to elevate artists and works that have been excluded or erased from mainstream conversations\, Cortijo encourages critical discussion while connecting the participants’ individual histories and stories with the art and art makers. \nImage caption:\nOscar Bluemner\, House and Tree\, 1917\nOil on composition board\, 15 x 20 inches

SUMMARY:Explore Art with Jano (ONLINE)
DESCRIPTION:Join us with your curiosity and come ready to share thoughts and ideas. Our final session in the series about female artists and abstraction will present the work of Irene Rice Pereira\, whose crowded and often industrial looking compositions defied expectations about what female painters should depict during the first half of the XX century. \n\nAn acute observer and learner who channeled the most avant garde movements of her time Pereira experimented with form and medium to create striking and intricate artworks. \nJano Cortijo is a gay\, immigrant\, bilingual arts educator whose work finds him engaging audiences of various ages\, abilities\, and backgrounds in museums\, classrooms\, community centers\, or computer screens. Jano encourages critical discussion while connecting the participants’ individual histories and stories with the art and art makers. \nThis program is appropriate for people living with mild to moderate dementia and their care partners. A Zoom link will be provided to you in an email once you have registered for this program. \nFor more information contact our Active Living Program Coordinator Kristin Bartlett or call 416-389-6099 \n  \nPhoto credit: Irene Rice Pereira\, Landscape of the Absolute (1955); oil and enamel on canvas

SUMMARY:Mid-Town Social
DESCRIPTION:Mid-Town Social focuses on social wellness for people with Dementia and their care partners. This month we will collaborate with Jano Cortijo\, an established arts educator. We will enjoy a meditative drawing and collaging program together inspired by the work of Ruth Asawa\, a prolific artist who made drawing a regular ritual often depicting her personal\, immediate surroundings. Using line\, shape and colour in ingenious and unexpected ways\, Asawa crafted an extensive body of work that comfortably and masterfully exists between abstraction and figuration. \nWe will look at and discuss some of her drawings and mixed media pieces and then create our own compositions. \nThis program is appropriate for people living with mild to moderate dementia and their carepartners. \nFor more information contact our Active Living Program Coordinator Tracey Adams Thibaudeau at activeliving@alz.to or 647-456-6168 \nPhoto credit: Ruth Asawa\, Untitled (BMC\, 57\, Curved Lines) c. 1946-49\, Ink on paper.
