DESCRIPTION:This 8-week online program is for care partners of people with mid- to late-stage dementia. Developed by the Reitman Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital\, CARERS is a comprehensive dementia care program that supports problem-solving skill development and introduces the innovative use of standardized patients – actors trained to simulate real-life situations – so that caregivers\, guided by expert clinical coaches\, will learn how to address communication challenges. \nGoals of the Program: \n\nEnhance practical skills for caregivers\nImprove caregivers’ coping and problem-solving skills\nEnhance caregivers’ confidence in dealing with challenges\nImprove caregivers’ social interaction and social support\n\n  \nSession dates:\nWednesdays from 3:00pm–5:00pm\, starting March 19th\, ending May 7th. \n\nWeek 1 – March 19th\nWeek 2 – March 26th\nWeek 3 – April 2nd\nWeek 4 – April 9th\nWeek 5 – April 16th\nWeek 6 – April 23rd\nWeek 7 – April 30th\nWeek 8 – May 7th\n\nPlease note\, participants are expected to commit to all 8 sessions listed above. It welcomes participants to choose their own intensity level\, speed and range of motion. The principles of water protect joints\, and build strength\, flexibility\, balance and endurance. Aquafit not only benefits the body\, it stimulates the mind and rejuvenates the spirit. \nCatherine Lyons-Bozzo is a WaterART Certified Master Trainer\, certified in Shallow/Deep\, Boot Camp\, Mind/Body\, Parent/Tot\, Arthritic\, Common Movement Disorders\, Running\, Master Trainer\, Senior H20 and Senior Land. She has many aquatic and sport certifications including being a Lifeguard\, Swim Instructor\, Swim Team Coach\, Figure Skating Coach and Gymnastics Coach. SUMMARY:UHN Caregiver Talks: An overview of the Genetics of Dementia - What to think about when thinking about testing.
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nInterest in the genetics of dementia has increased with the availability of new treatments and clinical trials. This presentation will review the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease and Frontotemporal dementia. We will then discuss reasons\, implications\, and the process for testing someone with dementia as well as testing relatives who are at risk for inheriting a dementia-related gene. Making the decision to have genetic testing requires careful thought. \nAbout the Presenter: \nJill Goldman is a Professor of Genetic Counseling in Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center. She has specialized in hereditary neurological diseases such as FTD\, Prion disease\, Alzheimer’s disease\, Parkinson’s disease\, and Huntington’s disease.  She is on the faculty of the Columbia University Master’s Program in Genetic Counseling. Additionally\, she leads a support group for caregivers of people with frontotemporal dementia. She also created and coordinates “A Friend for Rachel”\, a companionship program in which people with early to moderate dementia are paired with Columbia pre-medical students. Ms. Goldman has authored many papers and book chapters including: “Genetic counseling and testing for Alzheimer disease: joint practice guidelines of the American College of Medical Genetics and the National Society of Genetic Counselors” (Genet Med. 2011). She is the editor of the textbook: Genetic Counseling for Adult Neurogenetic Disease: A Casebook for Clinicians\, Springer\, 2015. Ms. Goldman is an emeritus member of the medical advisory council of the Association for Frontotemporal Dementia (AFTD) Board and  presently an AFTD Board of Director\,  and Chair of the Advisory Board for the Columbia University Genetic Counseling Master’s Program.

DESCRIPTION:Enhance your knowledge of Developmental Disabilities (DD) and Dementia. Risk for dementia appears to be 5 times higher for people with DD compared to the general population. \nThis course will explore the unique challenges faced by the person and their families and opportunities to support someone who is living with developmental disabilities and dementia. Recognize different ways in which communication occurs and explain how communication changes in a person with dementia.  Learn about strategies that can support communication the person and recognize the benefits of validating a person’s feelings when trying to communicate. \n  \nWorkshop will be presented using Zoom.  \nRegistration is required. Registration deadline is April 3rd\, 2025.

DESCRIPTION:The Community Connections Café is a welcoming space where people with memory loss or Dementia\, and their care partners\, can come to connect with others and support their brain health while socializing. This is an opportunity to enjoy simple refreshments and make new friends in a Dementia Friendly Community Space.\n\nThe Community Connections Cafe focuses on social wellness for people with memory loss or Dementia\, and their care partners. The program is informal with the intended atmosphere of a local coffee shop where participants can chat over a beverage\, do something creative\, or play a game.\n\nEvery 2nd Wednesday of the month from 12:30pm to 2:30pm In-person at our AST Mid Scarborough Hub.\n\nLocation: 2658 Eglinton Avenue East\, Scarborough\, ON\, M1K2S3\n\n\n\nRegistration is required for this program and closes at midnight (12am) the day prior to the event. Please specify the number of guests attending when you register. You may register up to 3 persons per group.

DESCRIPTION:Minds in Motion® is an evidence-based program that includes physical activity\, socialization\, and mentally stimulating activities for people living with dementia and their care partners to participate in together. \nThis program runs once a week for 8 weeks In-Person at St-Andrew’s United Church located at 117 Bloor St. E\, Toronto\, On\, M4W 1A9. \nWednesdays from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM from February 19th – April 9th 2025\nFeb 19th\, 26th\, March 5th\, 12th\, 19th\, 26th\, April 2nd\, & 9th 2025\n \nThis is a great environment to establish new friendships with others who are living with similar experiences. Combining physical\, mental\, and social stimulation improves brain health and may slow the disease progression.
