SUMMARY:EASE Session 2: Supporting Responsive Behaviours
DESCRIPTION:The E.A.S.E program is a 4 session program developed for PSWs currently working with persons living with dementia. \nThe program will engage PSWs in dementia education\, giving practical tools to improve the level of care and support provided to persons living with dementia and the PSW – a real-life approach. PSW’s will leave each session with tools/ideas to use right away on the job. \nNOTE: Each session is a stand-alone but can be taken in tandem. Registration is required for each session. Learners who complete all four sessions within a 1 year period (April-March) will be eligible for a certificate acknowledging their participation. \nDates: \nThursdays\, November 7th\, 14th\, 21st\, and 28th. \nTime:\n12pm – 1pm \nSession 2 – Supporting Responsive Behaviours\nOur life’s story can become our behaviors: how can a PLWDs past dictate how they present in the here and now? \nThe presentation will be online via Zoom\, and you will receive the Zoom link after you register.

SUMMARY:Cantonese Peer Support Group for Care Partners
DESCRIPTION:This Cantonese Peer-led Support Group provide care partners to connect with one another and learn and discuss the practical and emotional needs related to caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias. Each session will be broken down into two components: An Educational presentation followed by discussion and sharing related to the presentation topic. Groups are facilitated by volunteers who have lived experience as care partners and have received training on group facilitation. DESCRIPTION:What is U-First!®  for Care Partners? \nU-First!® for Care Partners is a new education program for family and friends who are providing direct support to someone experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment. \nThis 6 hour education program will help you to: \n\nEnhance well-being of care partners and of the person they are supporting who is experiencing behaviour changes\nReduce responsive behaviours by using the U-First!® framework\nImprove collaboration among all team members through a common knowledge\, language and approach to care.\n\nMandatory Session Dates:\nMonday\, November 18th from 5:00pm-7:00pm\nMonday\, November 25th from 5:00pm-7:00pm\nMonday\, December 2nd from 5:00pm-7:00pm \nOptional Session Date:\nMonday\, December 9th from 5:00pm-7:00pm \nWho should attend? \nU-First!® for Care Partners is for family and friends of people experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment who provide direct support for that person in an unpaid role. \nWhat’s involved in the program? \n\nInteractive learning approach that has participants reflect on their experiences\, engage with new content\, practice using a variety of methods including case studies and plan for how they will implement what they have learned.\nLearners receive a Participant Workbook and a U-First!® Wheel to use during the program and keep as useful resources for applying their learning.\nLearners will also be invited to take part in an evaluation to better understand the effectiveness and outcomes of the program.  In addition\, a sample of participants will be invited to take part in an interview with the Evaluator. All learners will be invited to participate in evaluation activities but will not be excluded from the program if they choose not to participate in the evaluation.\n\nWhat’s the cost for the program? \nThere is no cost for participants of U-First!® for Care Partners. \nPlease note that there will be additional screening of all interested participants to ensure there is a fit between the program and participant. \nRegistration closes October 20th\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:The E.A.S.E program is a 4 session program developed for PSWs currently working with persons living with dementia. \nThe program will engage PSWs in dementia education\, giving practical tools to improve the level of care and support provided to persons living with dementia and the PSW – a real-life approach. PSW’s will leave each session with tools/ideas to use right away on the job. \nNOTE: Each session is a stand-alone but can be taken in tandem. Registration is required for each session. Learners who complete all four sessions within a 1 year period (April-March) will be eligible for a certificate acknowledging their participation. \nDates:\nThursdays\, November 7th\, 14th\, 21st\, and 28th. \nTime:\n12pm – 1pm \nSession 3 – Tips in Supporting People with Dementia\nIt is empowering to have a tool belt of resources at our fingertips. SUMMARY:Long-Term Care Caregiver Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for caregivers of individuals living with dementia residing in long-term care to come together to share personal feelings and support each other through the caregiving experience. \nShould you choose to participate in this group please know that we expect you to observe the strictest confidentiality. In order to participate in this group\, the person you support must have some cognitive impairment and you or the resident must live in the M postal code. \nTo guide discussion\, the group will focus on a different theme relating to LTC on each month. Themes that will be discussed include: \n\nTransition to LTC\nManaging feelings of guilt\, relief and sadness\nHow to prepare for Plan of Care Meetings and what to expect\nFamily Councils\nGrief and Ambiguous Loss\nAdvanced Health Care Planning\nWhat are responsive behaviours and why do they happen?\nActivities to engage the person you are supporting\nSpecial Occasions\n\n  \nEvery 1st Thursday of the month from 5:30pm to 7:00pm online using Zoom\n(Zoom information will be provided via email at least 24-48 hours prior to the date) \n  \n*Disclaimer: Registration is required and closes at midnight (12am) the Monday prior to the session. SUMMARY:Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) Training
DESCRIPTION:Training for personal support workers or front-line health-care providers. \nGPA Basics is a 4 module evidence-based education session designed for team members who care for older adults who display responsive behaviours associated with dementia. The GPA curriculum will educate staff on how to use a person-centred\, compassionate and gentle persuasive approach and to respond respectfully\, with confidence and skill to responsive behaviour associated with dementia. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExplain the relationship between the disease process and a person’s behaviour response\nApply emotional\, environmental\, and interpersonal communication strategies to prevent and diffuse responsive behaviours\nDemonstrate suitable and respectful techniques to use in situations of risk\n\nDate and Time: \nFriday\, December 6th from 9:00am to 5:00pm\n(You must attend the full day to complete the training) \nCost: $80 \nThis is an In-Person workshop at our Alzheimer Society of Toronto head office.\nAddress: 20 Eglinton Ave West\, 16th Floor\, Toronto\n(Northwest corner of Yonge and Eglinton\, accross the street from Yonge and Eglinton subway station. SUMMARY:U-First! (for Health Care Professionals) – Special Funding
DESCRIPTION:U-First!® for Health Care Professionals supports health care and other service providers who work with people living with dementia or other cognitive impairments. U-First!® builds on existing curriculum and encourages learners to make lifelong learning a goal. The vision is to provide every member of the care team with consistent education on key skills and best care practices. It sets the stage for common knowledge\, language for communicating with all members of the care team (including informal care partners)\, and a comprehensive approach to care. \nThis program is for personal support workers and other front-line health care workers (including dietary\, rehabilitation and social service staff\, activationists\, nurses\, and health care students). \nWe highly recommend that you take Dementia Foundations prior to registering to this course. \n\n  \nDate and Time: \nSaturday\, December 7th from 8:00am to 3:00pm \n  \nCost: Free\nThanks to funding provided through our Unforgettable Gala Fund A Need\, we are able to provide this training at no cost to you. \nPlease enter your complete address (including apartment number if applicable) when you register.
