DESCRIPTION:This 4-week online caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience\, with a structured focus on the concept of “Ambiguous Loss”. This group is inspired by Pauline Boss’ book “Loving Someone With Dementia“.\n\nLearning Objectives \n\nDevelop an understanding of the concept of “Ambiguous Loss” and ambiguous loss in the context of dementia\, and how this unique type of loss differs from other losses\nDevelop coping strategies to implement in their own lives\nObtain a better understanding of their own experiences of grief related to caring for their family member\nEngage in self reflection and share insights related to their caregiving experience\nLearn from others on adjusting to the losses and their own changing relationship to self and others\n\nThis group will run for four consecutive weeks online using Zoom. Zoom information will be provided via email at least 24-48 hours prior to the start date.\n \nSession dates:\n\nThursdays from 10am–12pm\, starting November 14th ending December 5th.\n\nWeek 1 – November 14th\nWeek 2 – November 21st\nWeek 3 – November 28th\nWeek 4 – December 5th\n\n* Please note\, participants are expected to commit to all 4 sessions listed above. It is an hour of pure joy and fun! \nNovember 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, 27th\, December 4th & 11th 2024. \nSteve Koven is a composer\, performer\, producer\, educator\, and filmmaker. His band the Steve Koven Trio has toured the world for more than two decades\, and they have been coined the ‘Canadian Cultural Ambassadors’. As an educator\, Steve has been teaching in the Faculty of Music at Toronto’s York University\, teaching Contemporary Improvisation and Jazz Piano Studies. DESCRIPTION:What is U-First!®  for Care Partners? \nU-First!® for Care Partners is a new education program for family and friends who are providing direct support to someone experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment. \nThis 6 hour education program will help you to: \n\nEnhance well-being of care partners and of the person they are supporting who is experiencing behaviour changes\nReduce responsive behaviours by using the U-First!® framework\nImprove collaboration among all team members through a common knowledge\, language and approach to care.\n\nMandatory Session Dates:\nMonday\, November 18th from 5:00pm-7:00pm\nMonday\, November 25th from 5:00pm-7:00pm\nMonday\, December 2nd from 5:00pm-7:00pm \nOptional Session Date:\nMonday\, December 9th from 5:00pm-7:00pm \nWho should attend? \nU-First!® for Care Partners is for family and friends of people experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment who provide direct support for that person in an unpaid role. \nWhat’s involved in the program? \n\nInteractive learning approach that has participants reflect on their experiences\, engage with new content\, practice using a variety of methods including case studies and plan for how they will implement what they have learned.\nLearners receive a Participant Workbook and a U-First!® Wheel to use during the program and keep as useful resources for applying their learning.\nLearners will also be invited to take part in an evaluation to better understand the effectiveness and outcomes of the program.  In addition\, a sample of participants will be invited to take part in an interview with the Evaluator. All learners will be invited to participate in evaluation activities but will not be excluded from the program if they choose not to participate in the evaluation.\n\nWhat’s the cost for the program? \nThere is no cost for participants of U-First!® for Care Partners. \nPlease note that there will be additional screening of all interested participants to ensure there is a fit between the program and participant. \nRegistration closes October 20th\, 2024.

SUMMARY:EASE Session 4: Personal Challenges
DESCRIPTION:The E.A.S.E program is a 4 session program developed for PSWs currently working with persons living with dementia. \nThe program will engage PSWs in dementia education\, giving practical tools to improve the level of care and support provided to persons living with dementia and the PSW – a real-life approach. PSW’s will leave each session with tools/ideas to use right away on the job. \nNOTE: Each session is a stand-alone but can be taken in tandem. Registration is required for each session. Learners who complete all four sessions within a 1 year period (April-March) will be eligible for a certificate acknowledging their participation. \nDates: \nThursdays\, November 7th\, 14th\, 21st\, and 28th. \nTime:\n12pm – 1pm \nSession 4 – Personal Challenges\nPersons we work with may exhibit behaviours that trigger a response in our own selves. DESCRIPTION:What is U-First!®  for Care Partners? \nU-First!® for Care Partners is a new education program for family and friends who are providing direct support to someone experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment. \nThis 6 hour education program will help you to: \n\nEnhance well-being of care partners and of the person they are supporting who is experiencing behaviour changes\nReduce responsive behaviours by using the U-First!® framework\nImprove collaboration among all team members through a common knowledge\, language and approach to care.\n\nMandatory Session Dates:\nMonday\, November 18th from 5:00pm-7:00pm\nMonday\, November 25th from 5:00pm-7:00pm\nMonday\, December 2nd from 5:00pm-7:00pm \nOptional Session Date:\nMonday\, December 9th from 5:00pm-7:00pm \nWho should attend? \nU-First!® for Care Partners is for family and friends of people experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment who provide direct support for that person in an unpaid role. \nWhat’s involved in the program? \n\nInteractive learning approach that has participants reflect on their experiences\, engage with new content\, practice using a variety of methods including case studies and plan for how they will implement what they have learned.\nLearners receive a Participant Workbook and a U-First!® Wheel to use during the program and keep as useful resources for applying their learning.\nLearners will also be invited to take part in an evaluation to better understand the effectiveness and outcomes of the program.  In addition\, a sample of participants will be invited to take part in an interview with the Evaluator. DESCRIPTION:These short-term support groups are for people living with early-stage memory loss\, mild cognitive impairment\, or dementia. These four-session support groups aim to improve quality of life by providing a space where people can share experiences\, discuss the emotional impact of a diagnosis and associated losses\, share coping strategies\, and support one another. \n\nThese groups are available in a virtual format (Zoom) and In-person. Each round consists of four weekly sessions that are 60 minutes long. DESCRIPTION:The Community Connections Café is a welcoming space where people with memory loss or Dementia\, and their care partners\, can come to connect with others and support their brain health while socializing. This is an opportunity to enjoy simple refreshments and make new friends in a Dementia Friendly Community Space. \nThe Community Connections Cafe focuses on social wellness for people with memory loss or Dementia\, and their care partners. The program is informal with the intended atmosphere of a local coffee shop where participants can chat over a beverage\, do something creative\, or play a game. \nEvery 3rd Wednesday of the month from 2:30pm to 4:30pm In-person at our AST Head Office. \nLocation: 20 Eglinton Ave West\, 16th Floor\, Toronto\n(Northwest corner of Yonge and Eglinton\, across the street from Yonge and Eglinton subway station. DESCRIPTION:Join The Power of Music with Steve – Our 6-week Virtual Music Program! \nThis program explores different musical genres though live musical performances and engaging conversations such as music on Broadway\, music and meditation\, great composers\, jazz\, musical improvisation\, and music and memories! It is an hour of pure joy and fun! \nNovember 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, 27th\, December 4th & 11th 2024. \nSteve Koven is a composer\, performer\, producer\, educator\, and filmmaker. His band the Steve Koven Trio has toured the world for more than two decades\, and they have been coined the ‘Canadian Cultural Ambassadors’. As an educator\, Steve has been teaching in the Faculty of Music at Toronto’s York University\, teaching Contemporary Improvisation and Jazz Piano Studies. This program focuses on promoting quality of life and comfort for individuals living with dementias and their families\, with particular emphasis on late stage and end of life.
