SUMMARY:Alzheimer’s Disease: What is it and Who is at Risk?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explain what Alzheimer’s Disease is\, how it is distinguished from other forms of dementia\, and who might be at higher risk for developing Alzheimer’s Disease. It will introduce how to address these risk factors\, as well as existing treatments to mitigate the neurodegenerative disease. \nThe webinar will also explore a study at Sunnybrook and UHN (together with partners at Baycrest and CAMH) in Toronto that is looking for participants. The study looks at whether very small doses of a drug called levetiracetam (LEV) may lower unusual brain signals in individuals who have no cognitive symptoms but have risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. \n  \nAbout the presenter: \nDr. Mary Pat McAndrews is a clinical neuropsychologist and cognitive neuroscientist at the Krembil Brain Institute\, University Health Network. Her research focuses on memory networks\, using functional neuroimaging and EEG/MEG\, studies of patients with medial temporal lobe damage\, and brain stimulation techniques to understand how these networks are organized and modified by focal damage or therapies. An important focus of this work is the identification of individual difference factors that contribute to vulnerability or resilience to disorders affecting memory that can be leveraged in clinical practice \n  \n  \nThis webinar is free to attend and is presented in plain language. You will also have the opportunity ask questions. \nPresented in partnership with the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance (TDRA) and the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
