SUMMARY:Living with Ambiguous Loss Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This 4-week online caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience\, with a structured focus on the concept of “Ambiguous Loss”. This group is inspired by Pauline Boss’ book “Loving Someone With Dementia“. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDevelop an understanding of the concept of “Ambiguous Loss” and ambiguous loss in the context of dementia\, and how this unique type of loss differs from other losses\nDevelop coping strategies to implement in their own lives\nObtain a better understanding of their own experiences of grief related to caring for their family member\nEngage in self reflection and share insights related to their caregiving experience\nLearn from others on adjusting to the losses and their own changing relationship to self and others\n\n  \nThis group will run for four consecutive weeks online using Zoom. Zoom information will be provided via email at least 24-48 hours prior to the start date. \nSession dates:\nThursdays from 10am–12pm\, starting May 1st ending May 22nd. \n\nWeek 1 – May 1st\nWeek 2 – May 8th\nWeek 3 – May 15th\nWeek 4 – May 22nd\n\n* Please note\, participants are expected to commit to all 4 sessions listed above. DESCRIPTION:This 8-week online program is for care partners of people with mid- to late-stage dementia. Kathleen Downie has facilitated many engaging art programs for the Alzheimer’s Society of Toronto clients over the years and is now an art therapy student attending the Vancouver Art therapy Institute (VATI) distance program. As part of her training\, Kathleen will be offering free one-on-one art therapy sessions for People Living with Dementia and their Care Partners. DESCRIPTION:What is U-First!®  for Care Partners? \nU-First!® for Care Partners is a new education program for family and friends who are providing direct support to someone experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment. \nThis 6 hour education program will help you to: \n\nEnhance well-being of care partners and of the person they are supporting who is experiencing behaviour changes\nReduce responsive behaviours by using the U-First!® framework\nImprove collaboration among all team members through a common knowledge\, language and approach to care.\n\n  \nMandatory Session Dates:\nMonday\, April 28th from 2:00pm-4:00pm\nMonday\, May 5th from 2:00pm-4:00pm\nMonday\, May 12th from 2:00pm-4:00pm \nOptional Session Date:\nMonday\, May 26th from 2:00pm-4:00pm\n(Please note that there is no session on May 19th) \n  \nWho should attend? \nU-First!® for Care Partners is for family and friends of people experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment who provide direct support for that person in an unpaid role. \nWhat’s involved in the program? \n\nInteractive learning approach that has participants reflect on their experiences\, engage with new content\, practice using a variety of methods including case studies and plan for how they will implement what they have learned.\nLearners receive a Participant Workbook and a U-First!® Wheel to use during the program and keep as useful resources for applying their learning.\nLearners will also be invited to take part in an evaluation to better understand the effectiveness and outcomes of the program.  In addition\, a sample of participants will be invited to take part in an interview with the Evaluator. DESCRIPTION:This monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of individuals diagnosed with OR suspected of having cognitive impairment residing in long-term care to come together to share personal feelings and support each other through the caregiving experience. \nShould you choose to participate in this group please know that we expect you to observe the strictest confidentiality. In order to participate in this group\, the person you support must have some cognitive impairment and you or the resident must live in the M postal code. \nTo guide discussion\, the group will focus on a different theme relating to LTC on each month. SUMMARY:UHN Caregiver Talks: An overview of the Genetics of Dementia - What to think about when thinking about testing.
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nInterest in the genetics of dementia has increased with the availability of new treatments and clinical trials. This presentation will review the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease and Frontotemporal dementia. We will then discuss reasons\, implications\, and the process for testing someone with dementia as well as testing relatives who are at risk for inheriting a dementia-related gene. Making the decision to have genetic testing requires careful thought. \nAbout the Presenter: \nJill Goldman is a Professor of Genetic Counseling in Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center. She has specialized in hereditary neurological diseases such as FTD\, Prion disease\, Alzheimer’s disease\, Parkinson’s disease\, and Huntington’s disease.  She is on the faculty of the Columbia University Master’s Program in Genetic Counseling. Additionally\, she leads a support group for caregivers of people with frontotemporal dementia. She also created and coordinates “A Friend for Rachel”\, a companionship program in which people with early to moderate dementia are paired with Columbia pre-medical students. Ms. Goldman has authored many papers and book chapters including: “Genetic counseling and testing for Alzheimer disease: joint practice guidelines of the American College of Medical Genetics and the National Society of Genetic Counselors” (Genet Med. 2011). She is the editor of the textbook: Genetic Counseling for Adult Neurogenetic Disease: A Casebook for Clinicians\, Springer\, 2015. Ms. Goldman is an emeritus member of the medical advisory council of the Association for Frontotemporal Dementia (AFTD) Board and  presently an AFTD Board of Director\,  and Chair of the Advisory Board for the Columbia University Genetic Counseling Master’s Program.
