SUMMARY:Tuning In: Music & Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:6-Week Series\, Mondays May 25th – June 29th from 1:30-3:00 PM at St-Andrew’s United Church located at 117 Bloor St East.  \nJoin us for an immersive and playful weekly series exploring music\, mindfulness\, and movement. Each session is crafted to cultivate joy\, support relaxation\, and promote both self-expression and community connection. This series welcomes participants living with mild to moderate dementia or Mild cognitive impairments along with their care team. Music Therapist and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) Michaela Bekenn will highlight the ways music and mindfulness can support wellbeing across the realms of cognitive\, physical\, social\, emotional\, and spiritual health. Each session will feature an engaging and fun group music-making process including singing familiar and new tunes\, rhythm-games\, and improvised songwriting. Inclusive approaches will be taken to invite participants into mindfulness-based activities such as gentle movement\, accessible meditation\, and calm breathing. Participants will also experience the benefits of a soothing “Sound bath\,” featuring a live soundscape to offer nourishment and ease. Tune in to the song of your heart and let’s celebrate the music of life\, together!  \nPlease note: the content of this session does not intend to substitute for medical advice or formal therapy of any kind. Participants and care-partners assume full liability for their safety and wellbeing throughout each session.  \nMichaela Bekenn (she/they) is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and Music Therapist based in Tkaronto (Toronto). Alongside her practice in healthcare\, she works as a certified sound therapy practitioner\, yoga instructor\, meditation guide\, and singer songwriter. Michaela is a certified facilitator of Compassion-Based Resilience Training and mindfulness for stress reduction\, addiction recovery\, and chronic pain. With an interdisciplinary background in theatre\, music\, dance\, and energy-work\, Michaela brings a holistic\, eclectic\, and playful energy to her practice. She supports people across the lifespan within both community and clinical settings including mental health care\, oncology\, long term care\, palliative care\, paediatric rehabilitation\, and classroom settings where she provides expressive arts programming for neurodiverse youth. Michaela is passionate for approaches to community care anchored within a framework of social justice and collective liberation. Michaela strives to create a welcoming space for folks of all identities to feel seen\, supported\, and nourished.

SUMMARY:Spousal CARERS Program
DESCRIPTION:This 8-week online program is for partners and spouses of people with mid- to late-stage dementia. Developed by the Reitman Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital\, CARERS is a comprehensive dementia care program that supports problem-solving skill development and introduces the innovative use of standardized patients – actors trained to simulate real-life situations – so that caregivers\, guided by expert clinical coaches\, will learn how to address communication challenges. DESCRIPTION:This workshop provides an overview of behaviours in dementia and communicating in a supportive manner. It will focus on providing participants with the knowledge of how behaviours and communication can change over the course of the disease and ways to supportively communicate with a person living with dementia. \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearning how dementia impacts communication\nRecognizing that behaviour is a form of communication\nDiscussing how to identify the meaning of behaviours in dementia and ways to offer support\n\n  \nPlease note this workshop is only for informal care partners (friends\, family\, etc) of a person living with dementia. This workshop is NOT for healthcare professionals. \n\nWorkshop will be presented using Zoom\, registration required to receive link.

DESCRIPTION:This gentle low impact dance fitness class with Jenn uses diverse music and simple dance movements to create a dynamic and energizing aerobic workout. With easy to follow moves that can be done seated or standing\, this upbeat class is set to positive\, playful and uplifting music. You will be motivated by the joyful\, welcoming and supportive environment that encourages you to let go and have fun! No experience required. \nJenn Hicks is a Personal Trainer Size and Inclusive Fitness Specialist who has taught dance fitness classes for the past 17 years. She was named NOW Magazine’s Best Virtual Fitness Instructor for 2020. Jenn customizes routines for every class and helps attendees modify steps or movements whenever they need a little extra care. \nThis program will be held on Zoom. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link to participate. \nPLEASE NOTE: Dance Fitness will revert to starting at 11:00 am – 12:00 pm beginning January 8th

SUMMARY:Retirement & LTC Caregiver Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of individuals diagnosed with OR suspected of having cognitive impairment residing in a long-term care or a retirement home environment to come together to share personal feelings and support each other through the caregiving experience. \nShould you choose to participate in this group please know that we expect you to observe the strictest confidentiality. In order to participate in this group\, the person you support must have some cognitive impairment and you or the resident must live in the M postal code. \nTo guide discussion\, the group will focus on different themes relating to long-term care and retirement home environments. Themes that will be discussed include: \n\nTransition to a retirement/long-term care home\nManaging feelings of guilt\, relief\, and sadness\nHow to prepare for meetings with staff and what to expect\nGrief and Ambiguous Loss\nAdvanced Health Care Planning\nWhat are responsive behaviours and why do they happen?\nActivities to engage the person you are supporting\nSpecial Occasions\n\n  \nEvery 1st Thursday of the month from 5:30pm to 7:00pm online using Zoom\n(Zoom information will be provided via email at least 24-48 hours prior to the date) \n  \n*Disclaimer: Registration for this group closes on the Monday prior to the session. SUMMARY:Living with Ambiguous Loss Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This 4-week online caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience\, with a structured focus on the concept of “Ambiguous Loss”. This group is inspired by Pauline Boss’ book “Loving Someone With Dementia“. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDevelop an understanding of the concept of “Ambiguous Loss” and ambiguous loss in the context of dementia\, and how this unique type of loss differs from other losses\nDevelop coping strategies to implement in their own lives\nObtain a better understanding of their own experiences of grief related to caring for their family member\nEngage in self reflection and share insights related to their caregiving experience\nLearn from others on adjusting to the losses and their own changing relationship to self and others\n\n  \nThis group will run for four consecutive weeks online using Zoom. Zoom information will be provided via email at least 24-48 hours prior to the start date. \nSession dates:\nMondays from 10am–12pm\, starting August 10th ending August 31st \n\nWeek 1 – August 10th\nWeek 2 – August 17th\nWeek 3 – August 24th\nWeek 4 – August 31st\n\n* Please note\, participants are expected to commit to all 4 sessions listed above.
