SUMMARY:Long-Term Care Caregiver Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for caregivers of individuals living with dementia residing in long-term care to come together to share personal feelings and support each other through the caregiving experience. \nShould you choose to participate in this group please know that we expect you to observe the strictest confidentiality. In order to participate in this group\, the person you support must have some cognitive impairment and you or the resident must live in the M postal code. \nTo guide discussion\, the group will focus on a different theme relating to LTC on each month. Themes that will be discussed include: \n\nTransition to LTC\nManaging feelings of guilt\, relief and sadness\nHow to prepare for Plan of Care Meetings and what to expect\nFamily Councils\nGrief and Ambiguous Loss\nAdvanced Health Care Planning\nWhat are responsive behaviours and why do they happen?\nActivities to engage the person you are supporting\nSpecial Occasions\n\n  \nEvery 1st Thursday of the month from 5:30pm to 7:00pm online using Zoom\n(Zoom information will be provided via email at least 24-48 hours prior to the date) \n  \n*Disclaimer: Registration is required and closes at midnight (12am) the Monday prior to the session. She was named NOW Magazine’s Best Virtual Fitness Instructor for 2020. Jenn customizes routines for every class and helps attendees modify steps or movements whenever they need a little extra care. \nThis program will be held on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Group Art Therapy with Kathleen Downie \nWeekly on Mondays from January 13th – February 24th (6-Week Series) from 1:30 – 3:00 P.M at AST located at 20 Eglinton Ave W\, 16th floor. \nJanuary 13th\, 20th\, 27th\, February 3rd\, 10th\, & 24th (skipping February 17th for Family Day) \nArt therapy is a mental health profession that combines the process of creative art expression with models of counselling and psychotherapy to enhance emotional\, physical\, and mental well-being. \nKathleen Downie has facilitated many engaging art programs for AST clients over the years and is now an art therapy student attending the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute (VATI) distance program. As part of her training\, Kathleen will be facilitating free art therapy group sessions. \nGroup art therapy sessions will provide participants with opportunities to work independently and with others to explore and express feelings and ideas that arise in the sessions. We will use a range of art materials and techniques including drawing\, painting\, and 2- and 3-D collage. DESCRIPTION:The TEACH (Training\, Education\, and Assistance for Caregiving at Home) Program is a Reitman Centre caregiver program which consists of 4 weekly group sessions that are each 90 minutes long. \nLearning objectives: \n\nFocus on common caregiving themes including; self-care\, healthcare system navigation\, relationship changes and future planning\nCoaches care partners in practical communication and coping skills\nProvides opportunity to share and learn from other care partners\n\n  \nSession dates:\nTuesdays from 1:30pm–3:00pm\, starting January 21st\, ending February 11th. \n\nWeek 1 – January 21st\nWeek 2 – January 28th\nWeek 3 – February 4th\nWeek 4 – February 11th\n\nPlease note\, participants are expected to commit to all 4 sessions listed above. Kindly register only if these dates work for you.\nIf this schedule does not work for you at this time\, you are encouraged to check out our ongoing support groups that are available for registration month-to-month. DESCRIPTION:Group Art Therapy with Kathleen Downie \nWeekly on Mondays from January 13th – February 24th (6-Week Series) from 1:30 – 3:00 P.M at AST located at 20 Eglinton Ave W\, 16th floor. \nJanuary 13th\, 20th\, 27th\, February 3rd\, 10th\, & 24th (skipping February 17th for Family Day) \nArt therapy is a mental health profession that combines the process of creative art expression with models of counselling and psychotherapy to enhance emotional\, physical\, and mental well-being. \nKathleen Downie has facilitated many engaging art programs for AST clients over the years and is now an art therapy student attending the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute (VATI) distance program. As part of her training\, Kathleen will be facilitating free art therapy group sessions. \nGroup art therapy sessions will provide participants with opportunities to work independently and with others to explore and express feelings and ideas that arise in the sessions. We will use a range of art materials and techniques including drawing\, painting\, and 2- and 3-D collage. DESCRIPTION:This 8-week online program is for care partners of people with mid- to late-stage dementia. SUMMARY:Brain Stimulation and Dementia: Exploring the Current Landscape Through Diverse Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:To mark Alzheimer’s Awareness Month\, the Alzheimer Society of Toronto\, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health\, and the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance have partnered to bring you a virtual panel exploring innovative approaches in Alzheimer’s disease research and care. \nSummary: \nCurrent medications for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias have limited effectiveness and often come with significant side effects\, highlighting the urgent need for new and safer treatments. One promising area of research is brain stimulation\, which uses electrical or magnetic signals to influence brain activity. These treatments can be done invasively\, with small electrodes placed inside the brain\, or non-invasively\, with electrodes on the scalp. Already approved for treating conditions like depression\, brain stimulation shows promise in early studies for reducing symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other dementias\, as well as for slowing cognitive decline and preventing progression to dementia. \nDuring this panel\, we will: \n\nProvide an overview of brain stimulation therapies\, including different types\, their applications\, risks\, benefits\, and limitations\nShare insights into the latest research and opportunities for participation\nHighlight the perspective of a research participant who has firsthand experience with brain stimulation\n\nThis event will be presented in plain language\, and include opportunities to engage with the panelists and have your questions answered. \n  \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Mina Mirjalili  is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She completed her PhD in computational neuroscience at the University of Toronto. With a background in electrical engineering and computer modelling\, Dr. Mirjalili’s research focuses on creating new treatments to improve cognitive function in people with mental health conditions. Her work involves developing personalized brain stimulation techniques and studying how the brain works during thinking processes. \n  \nDr. Luca Pisterzi is the Vice President of Research\, Programs\, and Evidence at the Alzheimer Society of Canada. He is also a member of Canada’s Ministerial Advisory Board on Dementia. Dr. Pisterzi holds a PhD in Molecular Pharmacology and Biophysics and a Global Executive MBA in Healthcare and the Life Sciences. Having spent the last decade in various roles related to Alzheimer’s and dementia research\, he focuses on turning research findings into practical solutions that improve the quality of life for those affected. \n  \nVince Pancuska has valuable perspectives and insights through his lived experience with mild cognitive impairment\, caregiving for someone with dementia\, and participation in clinical research studies at CAMH.
