Dementia and Developmental Disabilities (for Health Care Professionals) – ALZeducate

Enhance your knowledge of Developmental Disabilities (DD) and Dementia. Risk for dementia appears to be 5 times higher for people with DD compared to the general population. This workshop will explore the unique challenges faced by the person and their families and opportunities to support someone who is living with developmental disabilities and dementia. Recognize different ways in which communication occurs and explain how communication changes in a person with dementia. Learn about strategies that can support communication the person and recognize the benefits of validating a person’s feelings when trying to communicate.

U-First! (for Health Care Professionals) (Half-Days) – Zoom – Special Funding

U-First!® for Healthcare Providers supports health care and other service providers who work with people living with dementia or other cognitive impairments. U-First!® builds on existing curriculum and encourages learners to make lifelong learning a goal. The vision is to provide every member of the care team with consistent education on key skills and best care practices. It sets the stage for common knowledge, language for communicating with all members of the care team (including informal care partners), and a comprehensive approach to care.
 
This program is for personal support workers and other front-line health care workers (including dietary, rehabilitation and social service staff, activationists, nurses, and health care students).
 
We highly recommend that you take Dementia Foundations prior to registering to this course. 
 
 
Date and Time:  
Thursday, October 10th and 17th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm
(Participants must attend both days in full to receive certification)

Cost: Free
Thanks to funding provided through our Unforgettable Gala Fund A Need, we are able to provide this training at no cost to you.

Measuring Visual Abilities and Electrical Signals in the Brain for Early Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease

Summary:

Presented by Dr. Eugenie Roudaia, this webinar will explore how vision and visual perception changes with aging and in the presence of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Roudaia will discuss how we can use vision-based tasks and the brain’s electrical signals to detect Alzheimer’s disease earlier, and predict future cognitive health for individuals experiencing cognitive decline.

Dr. Roudaia will introduce an observational study, for which she is principal investigator, Bright Spark: Measuring Brain Activity to Predict Cognitive Health in MCI & Alzheimer’s Disease

About the presenter:
Eugenie Roudaia, PhD
Dr. Eugenie Roudaia is a Scientific Associate at Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest Academy for Research and Education, where she co-leads the VisAge laboratory with Dr. Allison Sekuler. She earned her PhD from McMaster University in Psychology. The aims of her research are to better understand how vision changes in healthy and abnormal aging, finding new ways to monitor brain health with age, and identifying how we can improve mental and perceptual abilities in older adults.

This 4-session series explores the different issues Frontline Health Care Providers may experience when providing care to People Living with Dementia. In this series of workshops, participants will receive information on a variety of self care topics in addition to learning tips and strategies on how to work better as a team with the aim of enhancing client care.

These workshops will be online using Zoom.

Self-Care
Tuesday, June 11th, from 1:30pm to 3:00pm
This session will discuss the concept of Self Care and the important role it plays in managing the day-to-day stress associated with a Health Care Professional’s occupation.
Putting You First
Tuesday, July 9th, from 1:30pm to 3:00pm
This workshop will focus on enhancing your self awareness of your current well-being. It will also support your reflection for opportunities to create a better balance in your life.
Navigating Difficult Conversations
Tuesday, September 10th, from 1:30pm to 3:00pm
This presentation will address why some reactive behaviors may happen. We will discuss how hurtful or negative comments can affect us. We will review helpful strategies in building resilience for ourselves and ways to navigate these difficult conversations; increasing our sense of well-being.
Grief and Loss
Tuesday, October 8th, from 1:30pm to 3:00pm
This session will cover the significant bonds that can be formed between a resident and Health Care Professional. It will also highlight the emotional impact that the death of a resident/patient can have on these individuals as a result of their connection.
