Dance Fitness – Zoom

This gentle low impact dance fitness class with Jenn uses diverse music and simple dance movements to create a dynamic and energizing aerobic workout. With easy to follow moves that can be done seated or standing, this upbeat class is set to positive, playful and uplifting music. You will be motivated by the joyful, welcoming and supportive environment that encourages you to let go and have fun! No experience required.

Jenn Hicks is a Personal Trainer Size and Inclusive Fitness Specialist who has taught dance fitness classes for the past 17 years. She was named NOW Magazine’s Best Virtual Fitness Instructor for 2020. Jenn customizes routines for every class and helps attendees modify steps or movements whenever they need a little extra care.

This program will be held on Zoom. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link to participate.

In-Person Caregiver Support Group (2:30pm to 4:30pm) – 20 Eglinton Ave W

This in-person monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for caregivers/partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience.

Learning Objectives:
– Opportunity to share feelings and insights with each other related to their personal caregiving experiences
– Discuss and share different strategies regarding self-care and care for the person they are supporting (including stress, communication and responding to behaviours)
– Learn about how others are adjusting to their own changing relationship
– Receive information about the services available at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto

 

Every last Wednesday of the month from 2:30pm to 4:30pm In-person.


Location: 20 Eglinton Ave West, 16th Floor, Toronto
(Northwest corner of Yonge and Eglinton, across the street from Yonge and Eglinton subway station. Our office tower is to the left of Metro Grocery)

The Power of Music with Steve Koven

Wednesdays, August 28 – October 2 (6-week series) from 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM.
The Power of Music with Steve will be held in person at St-Andrew’s United Church located at 117 Bloor St East.

Join us in-person for The Power of Music, a 6-week series facilitated by Steve Koven. This program explores different musical genres though live performances, conversations about music, composers, creativity and improvisation. It is an hour of pure joy and fun!

Steve Koven is a composer, performer, producer, educator and film maker. His band the Steve Koven Trio has toured the world for more then two decades, and they have been coined the ‘Canadian Cultural Ambassadors’. As an educator, Steve has been teaching in the Faculty of Music at Toronto’s York University, teaching Contemporary Improvisation and Jazz Piano Studies. As well he teaches in the Music Department at Centennial College.

This series is appropriate for learners at all levels and provides opportunities for each participant to engage at their own pace and in their own style.

Face masks will be provided and encouraged to be worn throughout the duration of the program.

Spousal Support Group – Zoom

This support group is full, Click here if you wish to be in the wait list.

This monthly support group will provide an opportunity for spousal caregivers to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience. Group members will decide on the focus and direction of the group, and both practical and emotional needs will be explored.

• Share insights and experiences related to your personal caregiving experience
• Learn about how others are adjusting to their own changing relationships
• Receive updated information about dementia and the services available at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.

Support Group meets monthly on the last Monday of every month from 1:30-3:00 pm monthly online using Zoom.

This ongoing monthly support group provides an opportunity for care partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience.

Registration required; group will be held via Zoom and instructions will be provided prior to the group.

The Community Connections Café is a welcoming space where people with memory loss or Dementia, and their care partners, can come to connect with others and support their brain health while socializing. This is an opportunity to enjoy simple refreshments and make new friends in a Dementia Friendly Community Space
 
The Community Connections Cafe focuses on social wellness for people with memory loss or Dementia, and their care partners. The program is informal with the intended atmosphere of a local coffee shop where participants can chat over a beverage, do something creative, or play a game.
 
 
Every 3rd Wednesday of the month from 2:30pm to 4:30pm In-person at our AST Head Office.
 
Location: 20 Eglinton Ave West, 16th Floor, Toronto

U-First!® for Care Partners – Zoom

What is U-First!®  for Care Partners?

U-First!® for Care Partners is a new education program for family and friends who are providing direct support to someone experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment.

This 6 hour education program will help you to:

  • Enhance well-being of care partners and of the person they are supporting who is experiencing behaviour changes
  • Reduce responsive behaviours by using the U-First!® framework
  • Improve collaboration among all team members through a common knowledge, language and approach to care. 
Mandatory Session Dates:
Tuesday, August 20th from 10:00am-12:00pm
Tuesday, August 27th from 10:00am-12:00pm
Tuesday, September 3rd from 10:00am-12:00pm

Optional Session Date:
Tuesday, September 10th from 10:00am-12:00pm

Who should attend?

U-First!® for Care Partners is for family and friends of people experiencing behaviour changes as a result of dementia or other cognitive impairment who provide direct support for that person in an unpaid role. 

What’s involved in the program?

  • Interactive learning approach that has participants reflect on their experiences, engage with new content, practice using a variety of methods including case studies and plan for how they will implement what they have learned.
  • Learners receive a Participant Workbook and a U-First!® Wheel to use during the program and keep as useful resources for applying their learning.
  • Learners will also be invited to take part in an evaluation to better understand the effectiveness and outcomes of the program.  In addition, a sample of participants will be invited to take part in an interview with the Evaluator. All learners will be invited to participate in evaluation activities but will not be excluded from the program if they choose not to participate in the evaluation.

What’s the cost for the program?

There is no cost for participants of U-First!® for Care Partners. 

Please note that there will be additional screening of all interested participants to ensure there is a fit between the program and participant.

Timeless Flow – A Creative Art Series with Kristin and Tracey 
Mondays, August 19 – September 30 2024 from 1:30 P.M –  3:00 P.M at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto Head Office located at 20 Eglinton Ave W, 16th floor (6 week Series).

August 19, 26 Sept 9, 16, 23, 30, *skipping Sept 2nd for the Labour Day Holiday 
In this workshop, participants will explore the art of tapping into the flow as a way of transforming our sense of time. We will offer opportunities for participants to explore and dabble with different artistic mediums to creatively capture our moments in time.
This series is appropriate for people living with mild to moderate dementia or cognitive impairments and their carepartners, no background in art making required, all are welcome.
