The focus of the session will be on exploring the concept of denial and anosognosia, how it impacts persons with dementia and their care partners, and strategies for assisting families.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the concept of denial and anosognosia
  • Identify how denial impacts persons with dementia and their care partners
  • Explore behaviours and strategies for responding
  • Develop an understanding of supportive services in the community
 
This workshop is for care partners of a person living with dementia

This in-person monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for caregivers/partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience.

Learning Objectives:
– Opportunity to share feelings and insights with each other related to their personal caregiving experiences
– Discuss and share different strategies regarding self-care and care for the person they are supporting (including stress, communication and responding to behaviours)
– Learn about how others are adjusting to their own changing relationship
– Receive information about the services available at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto

Every fourth Thursday of the month from 10:00am-11:30am In-Person at the AST Mid-Scarborough Hub. 

Location: 2658 Eglinton Avenue East, Scarborough, ON, M1K 2S3 (attached to the Scarborough Center for Healthy Communities (SCHC) building).

This workshop is to help care partners identify their sources of stress and develop coping strategies. The focus of the session will be on exploring the concept of resilience and ways to build care partner resilience.
 
Learning Objectives:
  • Explore the different types of stress care partners may experience and develop coping strategies to deal with the stress
  • Increase awareness of the importance of self-care for the care partner
  • Develop an understanding of supportive services in the community and where to seek those services
  • Describe the concept of resilience and why it is important for care partners

Rehabilitation for Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia

Summary:
Presented by Dr. Arlene Astell this webinar will explain the role of movement, balance, fall prevention, communication and other cognitive and physical rehabilitation techniques for people living with dementia and mild cognitive impairment.
Dr. Astell will introduce two current studies for which she is principal investigator:
1) Understanding Task Sequencing in People with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Dementia to Inform the Use of Mixed Reality (Task Sequencing and Dementia Study)
2) Feasibility-Testing of a Youth Therapeutic Exercise Video Game System with Older Adults with Dementia (Bootle Blast and Dementia Study)

Arlene Astell PhD, BSc (Hons)
Dr. Arlene Astell is Director of the Dementia Aging Technology Engagement (DATE) lab at KITE, University Health Network, Toronto, Associate Professor in Department of Occupational Sciences & Occupational Therapy and Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, and Full Professor of Psychology at Northumbria University, UK. Dr. Astell has more than 20 years of experience developing and evaluating interventions to support people to age as well as possible, including those living with dementia.

This gentle low impact dance fitness class with Jenn uses diverse music and simple dance movements to create a dynamic and energizing aerobic workout. With easy to follow moves that can be done seated or standing, this upbeat class is set to positive, playful and uplifting music. You will be motivated by the joyful, welcoming and supportive environment that encourages you to let go and have fun! No experience required.

Jenn Hicks is a Personal Trainer Size and Inclusive Fitness Specialist who has taught dance fitness classes for the past 17 years. She was named NOW Magazine’s Best Virtual Fitness Instructor for 2020. Jenn customizes routines for every class and helps attendees modify steps or movements whenever they need a little extra care.

Knowledge 2 Action (K2A): Supporting Responsive Behaviours in Dementia Care – Zoom

This workshop is for health care providers and staff who provide direct care to people with behaviour changes due to dementia or other cognitive impairment. This workshop offers the participants an opportunity to build on and practice skills gained from dementia training programs (such as U-First!). Through a case study approach, participants will have an opportunity to work as a team and develop a supportive action plan for persons living with dementia who are experiencing responsive behaviours. 

This workshop will use case studies to help you:

  • Deepen your understanding and ability to apply the U-First! & PIECES Framework
  • Increase the wellbeing and quality of life of people with dementia experiencing behaviour changes
  • Reduce stress and increase job satisfaction for you and for others on the team
  • Enhance collaboration within the care team to develop and implement supportive strategies

  • Learning Objectives:

  • Recall the behavioural and psychological impact(s) of dementia
  • Describe the 7 Domains of Well Being
  • Recognize that behaviour has meaning specific to the individual 
  • Develop person-centred support strategies
  • Develop a supportive action plan as part of a team


  • Pre-requisites: Participants must have completed either ONE of the following:

  • U-First! for Healthcare Providers
  • Dementia Care Training Program/ODCTP
  • PIECES

    Dementia Foundations (for Health Care Professionals) – Zoom

    Dementia Foundations: The first step in your dementia education journey.
     
    This 3-hour course will provide you with a foundation of dementia, enabling you to enhance your knowledge in providing quality care for persons living with dementia. 
     
    By the end of this 3 hour course, learners will be able to:

    • Describe Person-Centered Care
    • Describe general aspects of aging, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
    • Interpret how changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease will affect all aspects of an individual’s life
    • Recognize that challenging behaviour is responsive behaviour
    • Recall services and programs offered by the local Alzheimer Society for professionals, people living with dementia and their care partners

    Learners are highly encouraged to take this course before registering for U-First! Basics or Palliative care to enhance the learning experience.
