Open General Caregiver Support Group (10:00 am to 12:00 pm)

This ongoing monthly support group provides an opportunity for care partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Opportunity to share insights and experiences with each other related to their personal caregiving experiences
  • Discuss and share different strategies regarding self-care and care for their family members (including stress, communication and responding to behaviours)
  • Receive updated information about dementia and the services available at the Alzheimer Sociery of Toronto and in the community
 
Support Group meet every last Monday of the month from 10:00am to 12:00pm online using Zoom.  

Registration required; group will be held via Zoom and instructions will be provided prior to the group.

This in-person monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for caregivers/partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience.

Learning Objectives:
– Opportunity to share feelings and insights with each other related to their personal caregiving experiences
– Discuss and share different strategies regarding self-care and care for the person they are supporting (including stress, communication and responding to behaviours)
– Learn about how others are adjusting to their own changing relationship
– Receive information about the services available at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto

Every third Tuesday of the month from 11:00am-12:30pm in-person at the AST Mid-Scarborough Hub. 

Location: 2658 Eglinton Avenue East, Scarborough, ON, M1K 2S3 (attached to the Scarborough Center for Healthy Communities (SCHC) building).

Drop-in Spousal Support Group – IN PERSON

This monthly, drop-in support group provides an opportunity for spouses caring for a person living with dementia to come together and support each other through the caregiving experience. The goals of this group are to share personal feelings, increase healthy coping strategies, decrease isolation, and improve awareness of resources and supports in the community.

Topics for discussion will be tailored to group needs, but may include:
• Managing stress
• Ambiguous loss
• Guilt
• Family dynamics
• Self-care
• Understanding responsive behaviors
• Long-term care

Dates and time: 3rd Tuesday of every month, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.

Location: Scotiabank Learning Centre (Room B-156) at Providence Healthcare 

Address: 3276 St Clair Ave E, Scarborough, ON M1L 1W1.

Parking: Available on-site for 2.75/each ½ hour or 10.00 daily maximum.

Registration: NOT REQUIRED – Drop-in Format

Covid Procedures: A mask is required at all times during the support group. Food and drink are not allowed in the support group space. Individuals who do not comply with Covid procedures may be asked to leave the group by the facilitator.

Open Adult Child Caregiver Support Group (5:30pm to 7:30pm) – Zoom

This monthly support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of a parent living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience.

Learning Objectives:
– Opportunity to share insights with each other related to their personal caregiving experiences
– Discuss and share different strategies regarding self-care and care for the person they are supporting (including stress, communication and responding to behaviours)
– Learn about how others are adjusting to their own changing relationship
– Receive updated information about the services available at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto

 

Every 3rd Thursday of the month from 5:30pm to 7:30pm online using Zoom.

This monthly support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of a person living with young onset dementia (diagnosed before the age of 65) to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Opportunity to share feelings and insights with each other related to their personal caregiving experiences
  • Discuss and share different strategies regarding self-care and care for the person they are supporting (including stress, communication and responding to behaviours)
  • Learn about how others are adjusting to their own changing relationship
  • Receive information about the services available at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto

This ongoing monthly support group provide an opportunity for care partners of individuals living with Lewy Body Dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Interact with other group members caring for those with Lewy Body Dementia
  • Become familiar with the specific type of dementia
  • Opportunity for therapeutic support as well as education information
  • Share experiences and concerns and receive support from the group facilitator and other group members

Peer Support Group for Care Partners

Our peer-led support groups provide care partners with the opportunity to discuss both practical and emotional needs related to caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias. These groups are facilitated by volunteers who have lived experience as care partners and have received training on group facilitation. Participants and peer facilitators decide on the focus and direction of the group.


Learning Objectives:
  • Provide a safe setting which promotes mutual support, both practical and emotional, throughout the course of the disease
  • Enhance care partner’s knowledge of the illness, available supports, and coping strategies.
  • This group meets online on the second Friday of every month from 10:30am to 12:00pm.
    Registration and a short pre-screening are required before attending this support group.

    In partnership with Providence, this monthly open support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of a parent living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience.

    • Discuss and share different strategies regarding self-care and care for their family members (including stress, communication and responding to behaviours) 
    • Learn about how others are adjusting to their own changing relationship

    Support Group is presented using Zoom.

    Long-Term Care Caregiver Support Group (5:30pm to 7:00pm) – Zoom

    This monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for caregivers of individuals living with dementia residing in long-term care to come together to share personal feelings and support each other through the caregiving experience.
     
    Should you choose to participate in this group please know that we expect you to observe the strictest confidentiality. In order to participate in this group, the person you support must have some cognitive impairment and you or the resident must live in the M postal code.
     
     

    To guide discussion, the group will focus on a different theme relating to LTC on each month.

    Themes that will be discussed include:

  • Transition to LTC
  • Managing feelings of guilt, relief and sadness
  • How to prepare for Plan of Care Meetings and what to expect
  • Family Councils
  • Grief and Ambiguous Loss
  • Advanced Health Care Planning
  • What are responsive behaviours and why do they happen?
  • Activities to engage the person you are supporting
  • Special Occasions
  •
