Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

Each January, the Alzheimer Societies across Canada lead Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, our campaign to break down barriers and remove the stigma surrounding dementia and its impact.

This year, the Alzheimer Society of Toronto wants to remind everyone that Life Continues. So Do We — The Spark in All of Us Endures.

Breaking Dementia Stigma in Canada

Every January Alzheimer Societies across Canada shine a light on the lived experience of people with dementia and their care partners. This year, the Alzheimer Society of Toronto (AST) is reframing the public conversation by celebrating the spark that continues to shine beyond a diagnosis.

What if we focused not on what dementia takes, but on what remains? At the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, we see people connected by a spark that cannot be erased — the spark that keeps us moving, creating, laughing, and living.

By 2030, researchers project that nearly 1 million people in Canada could be living with dementia.

Over half of Canadians say they worry about dementia, and yet so many still feel they have to carry that fear in isolation. Stigma convinces people to wait, to stay silent and to not seek they answers and help they need. When we speak openly, share stories, and seek information, people get help sooner and feel less alone. That’s where AST can become a lifeline.

At the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, we envision a Toronto where every person impacted by dementia lives with dignity, purpose and connection. We offer programs, education, counselling, healthcare navigation, social outings, and so much more for those individuals living with dementia and their families and care partners.

The Spark in All of Us Endures

Life doesn’t pause after an dementia diagnosis. The people we support remind us every day that we’re all connected by a spark of creativity, of joy, of curiosity that continues to shine in unexpected and beautiful ways.

This year we are focusing on those with lived experience who are pushing back against the stigma by continuing to explore, create, and connect. Follow us as we share stories of clients who continue to create and thrive in their own extraordinary ways.
