Dance Fitness – Zoom

This gentle low impact dance fitness class with Jenn uses diverse music and simple dance movements to create a dynamic and energizing aerobic workout. With easy to follow moves that can be done seated or standing, this upbeat class is set to positive, playful and uplifting music. You will be motivated by the joyful, welcoming and supportive environment that encourages you to let go and have fun! No experience required.

Jenn Hicks is a Personal Trainer Size and Inclusive Fitness Specialist who has taught dance fitness classes for the past 17 years. She was named NOW Magazine’s Best Virtual Fitness Instructor for 2020. Jenn customizes routines for every class and helps attendees modify steps or movements whenever they need a little extra care.

This program will be held on Zoom. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link to participate.

Mid-Town Social (IN-PERSON)

The Mid-Town Social focuses on social wellness for people with Dementia and their care partners. In this series, we create purposeful connections among people who are on similar journeys while engaging in a variety of engaging activities including art making, games, creative movement, cooking, meaningful conversations and more. The program is flexible and will be catered to the interests and needs of the group participants.

Working with Clay with Noel Yardley
Tuesdays, May 7th – June 11th 2024 from 1:30 P.M –  2:30 P.M at Noel Yardley Ceramics Studios located at 148 Gainsborough Rd. Toronto, ON, M4L 3C6 (6 week Series).

May 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, June 4th & 11th 2024
This 6 week course will familiarize participants with the basic techniques of working with clay with your hands – a great introduction to clay work. We will focus on three fundamental hand building skills: making a pinch pot, a coil pot and finally a slab pot. The skills required are relatively simple and accessible to anyone with the right encouragement and support. In this in-studio course, all tools and materials will be provided. We will alternate weekly between forming a new type of pot and learning how to add easy decorative elements to our pots such as carving, using an underglaze or slip and creating feet and handles. Participants will come away from the course with the ability to continue their exploration of pottery at home, using a few tools that can be found around the house, working in a well-ventilated space with clay.

Noel Yardley is a ceramic artist based in Toronto. He studied at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, graduating in 1998. In his ceramic work. Yardley applies experimental ceramic techniques and pop art culture influences to produce sculptural pieces . He has exhibited work at the Design Indaba (Cape Town), 100% Design (London) and Object en Maison (Paris). Yardley is in private collections in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Berlin, Milan, Virginia and Ontario.

In Cape Town South Africa, Yardley taught ceramics to teens and adults from 2007 to 2011 at Chrysalis Academy. He went on to become a production ceramicist and educator at Art in Forest from 2013 to 2018.

Yardley teaches at the Toronto School of Art and worked as a studio technician at the Gardner Museum. Currently, he works with fellow designer, Thomas Bollmann, at their own studio called MaakOst. Located on the East End , they focus on teaching, design and production ceramics.

Minds in Motion® is an evidence-based program that includes physical activity, socialization, and mentally stimulating activities for people living with dementia and their care partners to participate in together. 

This program runs once a week for 8 weeks In-Person at St-Andrew’s United Church located at 117 Bloor St. E, Toronto, On, M4W 1A9.

Wednedsays from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM from May 1st – June 19th 2024
May 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd , 29th, June 5th, 12th & 19th 2024

This is a great environment to establish new friendships with others who are living with similar experiences. Combining physical, mental, and social stimulation improves brain health and may slow the disease progression.

The Royal Conservatory – Rebanks Fellows Concert (273 Bloor Street W)

Monday, April 29th from 3:00 P.M – 4:00 P.M at The Royal Conservatory of Music located at 273 Bloor St W.

The Rebanks Family Fellowship and International Performance Residency Program at The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School is the only one of its kind in Canada, offering a rich curriculum for career development. Alumni of the program grace the world’s great stages, including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall and Koerner Hall, perform with major orchestras in Canada and abroad, and are members of leading chamber ensembles such as The ARC Ensemble, The Rolston Quartet and The Dior Quartet.

Enjoy a 45-minute chamber music recital by one of the 2023-24 Rebanks Fellows, followed by a short Q&A session led by Program Manager Jessica Wright. The 2023-24 Rebanks Fellows are: Elena Howard-Scott, soprano; Noa Sarid, violin; Christian Masucci Facchini, countertenor; Julia Mirzoev, violin; Jamal Al Titi, baritone; Tobias Elser, violin.

Movement, Minds & Magic series will be held at the Mid-Scarborough Hub, 2660 Eglinton Ave E, Scarborough, ON M1K 2S3
 
Movement, Minds & Magic is a program that combines the benefits of physical and cognitive exercise, socializing and expressive arts. This program is co-facilitated by Jenn Hicks (a Certified Personal Trainer) and Robin Gertin (a Certified Expressive Arts Therapist) who have over 20 years collective experience working with seniors and those living with dementia.

The program includes:

– 45 minutes of creative physical activity (with both seated and standing options),
– a break to have a snack and socialize and
– 45 minutes of social cognitive activity including conversation and an art-based activity that does not require any prior experience.

This series is appropriate for learners at all levels and provides opportunities for each participant to learn at their own pace and in their own style.
Face masks will be provided and encouraged to be worn throughout the duration of the program.

Join us for an in-person Social/Recreation program.

Join our monthly social at our Mid-Scarborough Hub! This program is an opportunity to meet like minded people, to engage in meaningful conversations, tap into our creativity and get active. This two hour social is a great way to find your community and partake in gentle movement to great playlists. East End Friends is intended for people living with dementia and their care partners, and it is offered through a culturally inclusive, accessible and dementia-friendly lens. Light refreshments will be served.
