This 4-week online caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of individuals living with dementia to come together to support each other through the caregiving experience, with a structured focus on the concept of “Ambiguous Loss”. This group is inspired by Pauline Boss’ book “Loving Someone With Dementia“.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of the concept of “Ambiguous Loss” and ambiguous loss in the context of dementia, and how this unique type of loss differs from other losses
  • Develop coping strategies to implement in their own lives
  • Obtain a better understanding of their own experiences of grief related to caring for their family member
  • Engage in self reflection and share insights related to their caregiving experience
  • Learn from others on adjusting to the losses and their own changing relationship to self and others
This group will run for four consecutive weeks online using Zoom. Zoom information will be provided via email at least 24-48 hours prior to the start date.
 
Session dates:
Thursdays from 10am–12pm, starting November 14th ending December 5th.
  • Week 1 – November 14th
  • Week 2 – November 21st
  • Week 3 – November 28th
  • Week 4 – December 5th

This interactive 2-hour workshop will help participants reflect on all aspects of their well-being. Through this guided reflection process, participants will identify opportunities for change and start creating a plan to attaining better balance in their lives.

Date and Time:
Wednesday, November 13th from 10:00am to 12:00pm

Workshop will be presented online via Zoom and In-Person at the AST Head Office

Registration is required to participate.

Our peer-led support groups provide care partners with the opportunity to discuss both practical and emotional needs related to caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias. These groups are facilitated by volunteers who have lived experience as care partners and have received training on group facilitation. Participants and peer facilitators decide on the focus and direction of the group.

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide a safe setting which promotes mutual support, both practical and emotional, throughout the course of the disease
  • Enhance care partner’s knowledge of the illness, available supports, and coping strategies.

This group meets online on the second Friday of every month from 10:30am to 12:00pm.

Registration and a short pre-screening are required before attending this support group.
