Mid-Town Social: Ikebana Program

Mid-Town Social supports social wellness for people living with dementia and their care partners. In this session, Aya Sugino and Keith Francis introduce Ikebana—the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging.

Ikebana, meaning “the way of flowers,” is a 500-year-old practice that emphasizes balance, simplicity, and mindfulness. Its focus on minimalism, natural forms, and connection to nature can support mental well-being, making it a meaningful activity for those living with dementia and their care partners.

Aya Sugino (Sogetsu School) and Keith Francis (MA) will explore biophilia—our connection to nature—while demonstrating Ikebana. They will also explain its core elements: Shin, Soe, and Hikae, representing heaven, humanity, and earth. A raffle for the Ikebana display will follow the session.

About the Presenters
Aya Sugino is a certified Ikebana instructor with over 15 years of experience, having taught widely and created installations for major cultural, corporate, and hospitality venues.

Keith Francis is an interdisciplinary researcher specializing in design, biophilia, and dementia. His work focuses on the relationship between environment, cognition, and well-being, and has been presented internationally.
