This monthly caregiver support group will provide an opportunity for care partners of individuals diagnosed with OR suspected of having cognitive impairment residing in a long-term care or a retirement home environment to come together to share personal feelings and support each other through the caregiving experience.

Should you choose to participate in this group please know that we expect you to observe the strictest confidentiality. In order to participate in this group, the person you support must have some cognitive impairment and you or the resident must live in the M postal code.

To guide discussion, the group will focus on different themes relating to long-term care and retirement home environments. Themes that will be discussed include:

  • Transition to a retirement/long-term care home
  • Managing feelings of guilt, relief, and sadness
  • How to prepare for meetings with staff and what to expect
  • Grief and Ambiguous Loss
  • Advanced Health Care Planning
  • What are responsive behaviours and why do they happen?
  • Activities to engage the person you are supporting
  • Special Occasions

 

Every 1st Thursday of the month from 5:30pm to 7:00pm online using Zoom

Tuesdays, November 3rd to December 8th (6-week program) from 10:30-11:30 at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital located at 150 Kilgour Road, Toronto, ON Canada M4G 1R8.

Aquafit is not swimming, it is a way to exercise in the water that can accommodate all ages, fitness levels, health considerations and abilities. It welcomes participants to choose their own intensity level, speed and range of motion. The principles of water protect joints, and build strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance. Aquafit not only benefits the body, it stimulates the mind and rejuvenates the spirit.

This program is for people living with mild to moderate dementia and/or cognitive impairments and their care partners, who both have comfortability in the water.

4-Week Series on Wednesdays, April 8th – April 29th from 1:30 – 3:00 P.M at AST located at 20 Eglinton Ave West, 16th floor.

Join our creative in-person Miniature Diorama workshop series, designed for individuals living with mild to moderate dementia and their caregivers. Roxanne Brathwaite will lead this program where we will return to a childhood pastime and re-create an interior that captures a moment in time shrunk to 1:6 scale (think Barbie’s size).

Roxanne Brathwaite is a Toronto-based maker who creates richly detailed miniature environments inspired by texture, materiality, and design history. Her miniature dioramas centred around warmth, safety, and emotional connection, her work invites viewers into intimate spaces while also addressing social issues such as domestic abuse, dementia, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Roxanne is a Season 1 contestant on CBC Gem/Netflix Canada’s Best in Miniature, has led workshops at the Gardiner Museum and Jamie Esplanade—which was nominated for a Toronto Heritage Award. She has exhibited with DesignTO, and is a 2023 recipient of the International Guild of Miniature Artisans (IGMA) Scholarship.

6-Week Series on Wednesdays from October 14th – November 18th from 1:30 – 3:00 PM at St-Andrew’s United Church located at 117 Bloor St East.

Join the Golden Threads Choir for an enriching in-person singing series, designed for individuals living with dementia and their care partners. Led by acclaimed musician Robin Dann, this program explores the joy of making music together, fostering connection and creativity.

During our workshops, you’ll experience:

  • Vocal warm-ups
  • Harmonizing
  • Exploring vocal ranges
  • The energizing experience of singing as one collective voice

No prior singing or choral experience is necessary—just a willingness to express yourself!

About Your Choir Leader:
Robin Dann is a critically acclaimed singer and the leader of the band Bernice, recognized internationally and nominated twice for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Prize. With over 15 years in Toronto’s vibrant music scene, Robin brings passion and expertise to our choir.

Do you love being in nature? Let your senses guide you to this 4-week program for the horticultural at heart. Join Active Living Program Coordinators – Kristin and Tracey – for Growing Wild, a nature inspired program from April 20th – May 11th from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Trinity Community Center located at 155 Crawford St.

Over the four weeks together we will chat about nature themed topics, take a stroll to a nearby park, enjoy some mindful moments in nature and get creative together, using elements from the natural world around us as inspiration.

This workshop is intended for paid caregivers, so whether you work in Long Term Care, Retirement, or in-home care this course will invite you to think differently and become curious about yourself and the caring relationships you cultivate.  *Light refreshments provided.

Did you know that you improvise everyday? Believe it! In Joking Aside: Improv …with Nigel, we will take that very skill you already have and use it to creatively learn, play – and most importantly – laugh. A bunch! Best part is – you don’t need to be funny. You just need to be in the moment. Yes, and… this 4-part series workshop will include entry level games and exercises that expand the world of improv and open other ways for you to communicate with your family, friends and peers. No Experience necessary. Positivity and an open mind, a must. This series is appropriate for people living with mild to moderate dementia or cognitive impairments, no background in improv, all are welcome.

This monthly, drop-in support group provides an opportunity for spouses of individuals diagnosed with OR suspected of having cognitive impairment come together and support each other through the caregiving experience.

The goals of this group are to share personal feelings, increase healthy coping strategies, decrease isolation, and improve awareness of resources and supports in the community. Topics for discussion will be tailored to group needs, but may include:

  • Managing stress
  • Ambiguous loss
  • Guilt
  • Family dynamics
  • Self-care
  • Understanding responsive behaviors
  • Long-term care
